Guardian Roofing & Gutters believes it’s important to give back and take care of our community. That is why each year the Guardian family takes time to determine how they can best give back to our community in a way that is unique to them.

In 2018 they found the answer in the Guardian Halo Project, an internal team-lead project where one homeowner in dire conditions would be gifted with a major roof repair or replacement. The local community was encouraged to nominate themselves or someone in need on the Guardian website.

Now in it’s fifth year, Guardian Roofing & Gutters invites you to nominate someone you know in need of a major roof repair or replacement. Find complete information about the 5th Anniversary of the Guardian Halo Project here. Nominate someone you know today!

November 2021 Charity of the Month – the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center https://mynorthwest.com/3205437/november-charity-of-the-month-the-duwamish-longhouse-and-cultural-center/ Tue, 09 Nov 2021 16:51:28 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3205437 The Seattle area has been home to the Duwamish tribe for hundreds of years. The Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center aims to preserve that history. This facility allows the members of the tribe to have a space that reflects their culture and educates others.

A meaningful location, visitors are able to see the Duwamish River and the ancient villages of Ha-Ah’-poos (“Where there are Horse Clams”) and Tohl-ahl-too (“Herring House”) to the east. The two story high structure includes a skylight and has archeological materials on display. There are events held to showcase traditional Duwamish cooking and teach about sustainability.

The mission of this project is “to promote the social, cultural, and economic survival of Seattle Washington’s aboriginal Duwamish Tribe”. This welcoming space honors the ancestors and leaders of the Duwamish people and immerse you in their culture.

KIRO Radio’s Halloween Special https://mynorthwest.com/3178743/kiro-radios-halloween-special/ Tue, 19 Oct 2021 16:01:29 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3178743 Experience a Live Radio Performance of Agatha Christie’s “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.”

On October 26th at 8 p.m. tune in to KIRO Radio for a special Halloween show presented by Museum of Glass, Seattle Radio Theatre and Town Hall Seattle. Listen as your favorite voices depict the eerie story of the 1939 Orson Welles’ version of Agatha Christies, “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.” Using the original script presented by CBS on KIRO more than 80 years ago, this story will re-create a spooky murder mystery. Featuring live sound effects creating a creepy mood, the action will unfold across the airwaves in the “theatre of the mind.”

Voices include Dave Ross, John Curley, Colleen O’Brien, Ursula Reutin, Gee Scott, Chris Sullivan, Aaron Granillo, Lisa Brooks, and KIRO 7 TV’s Nick Allard.

This event is presented in connection with René Lalique: Art Deco Gems from the Steven and Roslyn Shulman Collection, on view now at Museum of Glass. The artwork of René Lalique helped to define the Art Deco movement in the early twentieth century, a time that produced a staggering proliferation of literary talent that contributes to how we interpret and understand Lalique’s art today. These voices share varying perspectives on an extraordinary time, which saw the emergence of the suffragettes, the rise of fascism and the Nazi Party, continuing racism, wild hedonism, the buildup and then catastrophic collapse of the stock market, a world-wide pandemic, and the continuing fall-out and recovery from World War I.

The Rivkin Center’s SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer https://mynorthwest.com/2957640/the-rivkin-centers-summerun-walk-for-ovarian-cancer/ Thu, 08 Jul 2021 21:51:05 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=2957640 During the pandemic, nearly 10 million cancer screenings were missed. Early detection improves outcomes for all types of cancer, especially ovarian.

Ovarian cancer can be genetically linked to breast cancer. While breast cancer survival rates have improved, ovarian cancer remains the deadliest gynecological cancer and is underfunded by national funding agencies.

Ovarian cancer tends to be caught in later, less treatable stages, because its signs mimic common symptoms — abdominal pain, bloating, feeling full quickly, and a frequent need to urinate. While we all experience these occasionally, talk to your doctor if they’re severe or last for more than two weeks.

The Rivkin Center is a Seattle-based nonprofit fighting to end ovarian cancer. The organization funds ovarian cancer research around the world. The Rivkin Center also provides ovarian and breast health workshops in the community.

Join the race to end ovarian cancer at the Rivkin Center’s SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer on Sunday, July 11th. Register HERE!
