They believe that modeling acceptance, inclusion, and respect of all individuals transforms and strengthens our communities.
Athletes For Kids serves children in 1st-12th grades who have disabilities and special needs of all kinds.

They carefully match each child with a qualified high school athlete, who commits to mentoring a child for one to three years. Once a mentorship is formed, the pair meets two to four their times a month.

Mentor candidates are referred to their program by other AFK Mentors, coaches, teachers, Athletic Directors, and community members. Every applicant must pass a thorough screening and background check before being accepted into their program. Once selected, they are required to attend an intensive training, followed by monthly group meetings where they receive ongoing training and support from their Mentorship Coordinator. The training topics are all based on evidenced based best practices for mentoring.

September 2021 Charity of the Month: Gold Star Mothers of Washington https://mynorthwest.com/3117730/september-2021-charity-of-the-month-gold-star-mothers-of-washington/ https://mynorthwest.com/3117730/september-2021-charity-of-the-month-gold-star-mothers-of-washington/#respond Mon, 30 Aug 2021 22:22:10 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3117730 They are mothers whose sons or daughters became missing in action, died while on active duty, or died as a result of such service.

Their history: On June 4, 1928, a group of twenty-five mothers residing in Washington, DC, met to make plans to organize a national organization to be known as American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., a nondenominational, non-profitable and nonpolitical organization. On January 5, 1929, the organization was incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia. The Charter was kept open for ninety days. At the end of this time they had a membership of sixty-five, which included mothers throughout the United States: North, South, East and West. There were many small groups of Gold Star Mothers functioning under local and state charters. When these groups learned of a national organization with representation in nearly every State in the Union they wished to affiliate with the larger group and many did so. This group was composed of women who had lost a son or daughter in World War I.

Who is a Gold Star Mother? Often the question has been asked, “Who is a Gold Star Mother?” During the early days of World War I, a Blue Star was used to represent each person, man or woman in the Military Service of the United States. As the war progressed and men were killed in combat, others wounded and died of their wounds or disease, there came about the accepted usage of the Gold Star.

This Gold Star was substituted and superimposed upon the blue Star in such a manner as to entirely cover it. The idea of the Gold Star was that the honor and glory accorded the person for his supreme sacrifice in offering for his country, the last full measure of devotion and pride of the family in this sacrifice, rather than the sense of personal loss which would be represented by the mourning symbols.

The Rivkin Center’s SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer https://mynorthwest.com/2957640/the-rivkin-centers-summerun-walk-for-ovarian-cancer/ Thu, 08 Jul 2021 21:51:05 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=2957640 During the pandemic, nearly 10 million cancer screenings were missed. Early detection improves outcomes for all types of cancer, especially ovarian.

Ovarian cancer can be genetically linked to breast cancer. While breast cancer survival rates have improved, ovarian cancer remains the deadliest gynecological cancer and is underfunded by national funding agencies.

Ovarian cancer tends to be caught in later, less treatable stages, because its signs mimic common symptoms — abdominal pain, bloating, feeling full quickly, and a frequent need to urinate. While we all experience these occasionally, talk to your doctor if they’re severe or last for more than two weeks.

The Rivkin Center is a Seattle-based nonprofit fighting to end ovarian cancer. The organization funds ovarian cancer research around the world. The Rivkin Center also provides ovarian and breast health workshops in the community.

Join the race to end ovarian cancer at the Rivkin Center’s SummeRun & Walk for Ovarian Cancer on Sunday, July 11th. Register HERE!

They do so through the application of transformative teachings, in addition to building partnerships that make real solutions available to all. They strengthen and multiply their “Army” and resources by enrolling and uniting through their Family (and community) First Approach.

Family-First Approach: The work starts (and continues) with the family, typically Mom and Dad, long before they meet your loved one, who is struggling with addiction.

What is Battlefield Coffee House?

Battlefield Coffee House is their community project and a pathway to make the impact they are here to make, in addiction. All proceeds, sales, donations through the Coffee House keep their doors open and support their Baristas/Team members, who serve in exchange for their treatment and sober living costs.

This space is not just a coffee shop, but a “space for exploration and creation”, a training ground so-to-speak, for the Battlefield Addiction movement to grow and expand.

710 ESPN Seattle Partners with Coaching Boys Into Men https://mynorthwest.com/1305165/710-espn-seattle-partners-with-coaching-boys-into-men/ Thu, 14 Mar 2019 15:19:18 +0000 http://mynorthwest.com/?p=1305165 SEATTLE, WA – 710 ESPN Seattle has announced a new partnership with Coaching Boys Into Men. The sports station and local nonprofit will work together to encourage student athletes, as well as school coaches and athletic department leadership, to participate in the Coaching Boys Into Men curriculum which focuses on youth leadership skills, domestic violence prevention, and healthy relationships.

March, 2019, will mark the beginning of an extensive marketing and recruitment campaign utilizing several of 710 ESPN Seattle’s resources, partnerships and radio shows in an effort to help bring awareness to the program and expand their reach throughout the Pacific Northwest.

“We are excited to partner with an organization that makes such an important difference in our community,” said Mike Salk, Program Director for 710 ESPN Seattle and cohost of the “Brock & Salk” show.  “Coaching Boys Into Men has a unique ability to positively affect young people by helping them grow as leaders, while also changing long-term views on consent and respect.”

“Raising the bar for healthy relationships through Coaching Boys Into Men can be a catalyst for the betterment of our athletes, coaches, communities and ultimately our society,” said Ward Urion, Certified Trainer for Coaching Boys Into Men. “It is truly amazing to see how such a seemingly small investment of time and energy can have such a huge, lasting impact on the individual student athletes. I am inspired and filled with hope every day when I see measurable, tangible changes in young men that makes them part of the solution to issues our society has struggled with.”

About Coaching Boys into Men/Athletes as Leaders

Coaching Boys into Men and Athletes as Leaders inspire high school athletes on boys and girls teams to promote healthy relationships and to lead change in their communities. Using the influential relationship between coaches and athletes, and within teams themselves, these programs give young people the tools and vocabulary they need to stand up for respect and positively influence their school’s culture or their community.
