She was being treated at Harborview Medical Center for two days before she died.

Details are still unclear regarding the shooting, but several shell casings were found outside the apartments where this happened by law enforcement. The apartment complex, Creston Point Apartments, was the scene of two other shootings within the past year.

“Several gunshots were heard in the area,” Sergeant Eric White, a spokesperson for the King County Sheriff’s Office, told KIRO Newsradio. “A victim was found that had been hit by a stray bullet. That victim was a juvenile that was in one of the apartments.”

According to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office, the child was shot in the head and her death was ruled a homicide. No suspects have been arrested, as of this reporting.

“Our major crimes detectives are on scene investigating gathering evidence,” White added.

2 Tukwila teens charged with Costco parking lot murder https://mynorthwest.com/3961257/2-tukwila-teens-charged-with-costco-parking-lot-murder/ Wed, 29 May 2024 01:01:17 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3961257 King County Prosecutors announced last week charges against two teens for the murder of Mingyuan Huang in a Tukwila parking lot back in January.

Ilyiss Abdi, 18, and Salman Haji, 19, are charged with murder, robbery and attempted robbery. Abdi is behind bars on $5,000,000 bail but, according to court documents, Haji has fled the country.

Court documents stated the two teens were in a stolen car and on a crime spree on January 26. They allegedly stole a car in Seattle and then tried to use stolen credit cards in Normandy Park. Then they drove to a crowded Costco parking lot and saw two elderly sisters loading their car. They jumped out and allegedly tried to rob the women but when they resisted, Haji allegedly shot Huang once in the chest, while Abdi waited in the car. The two then sped off.

Huang died in the parking lot.

The shooting happened around 10:40 a.m. about 50 feet outside the front door of the store.

Other local crime: Attempted robbery near Auburn Walmart goes awry, victim shoots at suspects

According to those close to the investigation, Huang had no prior connection to the shooter before the fatal encounter.

Following the shooting, police agencies all over Western Washington were on the lookout for the suspects and the vehicle they were driving.

“I think people wondered when they didn’t see a headline of an arrest right away, or a charge right away if things were happening and they certainly were happening behind the scenes,” Casey McNerthney with the King County Prosecuting Attorey’s Offices said.

Court documents stated that less than a month later, Abdi was allegedly involved in another deadly incident. In that case, Abdi was charged with assault and firearm enhancement. He was previously convicted of attempted burglary.

Both teens are due in court on June 5 at 9 a.m.

When the two robbery suspects approached her, they demanded she hand over her valuables. Instead, she pulled out a gun and fired at the suspects.

“In the course of firing at the suspects, the female victim was shot,” Auburn Police spokesperson Kolby Crossley told KIRO 7.

She was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries by responding paramedics. Crossley stated it was not yet known whether the victim was shot by the suspects or by her own gunfire, according to KIRO 7.

Using drones, a K-9 unit, the King County Sheriff’s Office Guardian One helicopter and help from neighboring police agencies, local authorities were able to track down and arrest the suspects.

King County deputies search for suspect in connection to Sound Transit light rail attack https://mynorthwest.com/3961115/king-county-deputies-search-for-suspect-in-connection-to-sound-transit-light-rail-attack/ Sun, 26 May 2024 19:31:02 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3961115 King County deputies are searching for a woman in connection to an assault on a Sound Transit light rail on April 21.

KIRO 7 News spoke with the victim, Chris Blea, about the attack.

“I was shocked. I was stunned,” she said.

Blea said she was talking with her friend on the light rail while they were traveling to watch the Seattle Reign play when a woman hit her with a Gatorade bottle with no warning near the Capital Hill light rail station.

“She took a Gatorade bottle and just hit you like a bat upside the head,” Blea said a passenger told her. “My head hit the bar behind us. It was just boom. I was like what just happened.”

“I ended up with a concussion, whiplash. When I went to the doctor, I had fluid in my ear,” Blea added.

Blea said she believes in the light rail system but has become more hesitant to ride it since the attack.

“I’m a little bit leery still to get back on the light rail,” she shared. “I want to believe it was a one-off. I have to believe it’s going to be safe.”

“I want us to work together as a community. I want us to find this person. I want her to be brought to justice. I do think we need to work together as a community to make sure our city remains safe,” she added.

There have been a number of violent incidents on light rail over the past year, including a 37-year-old man who was stabbed to death a couple of weeks ago.

This year, there have been 44 assaults on the light rail, the agency told KIRO 7 News.

“Without minimizing how serious any attack is, light rail is still very safe, serving more than 2 million passengers each month,” said a spokesperson for Sound Transit.

Officials told KIRO 7 News that they currently have 500 security staff members to keep passengers safe, including a new team of Public Safety and Security Field Activity Specialists that’s available 24 hours a day for seven days a week, which has decreased their average response time to incidents by more than half, from 10 minutes to five minutes.

Crime Stoppers is offering $1,000 to anyone who has information that can lead to an arrest and charge.

“It’s (safety) extremely important. You expect to feel safe when you’re out and about in public and especially on a communal rail like that,” said Jim Fuda, director for Crime Stoppers of the Puget Sound. “We are a community, and we are only as strong as our citizens. Let’s keep our neighborhood safe. Let’s report things to the police if you feel something is not right, and it makes it safer for everybody.”

Teenagers, 12-year-old charged with violent crime spree in Seattle https://mynorthwest.com/3961058/teenagers-12-year-old-charged-seattle-violent-crime-spree/ Sat, 25 May 2024 02:59:37 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3961058 King County prosecutors have announced charges against two teenagers, ages 16 and 15, and a 12-year-old child for a violent crime spree earlier this month in Seattle.

According to court documents, the teens face multiple felony charges, including auto theft, assault, strong arm robbery and burglary.

“When you have allegations like this it’s got to be before the court. These aren’t diversion cases and if there are youth who think there are no consequences, I can just go home, that’s not the case,” Casey McNerthney, director of communications for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (KCPAO), said.

The group was in a stolen car, trying to evade police, on May 7, when a SWAT Team and the King County Sheriff’s Office Guardian One helicopter were called in. It was all recorded, including their arrests.

“It’s a very difficult situation because nobody wins out of it. The best we can do is try to decrease recidivism and have accountability in the clearest possible way,” McNerthney said.

More from the crime blotter: High-speed chase reaching 114 mph ends in arrest at Federal Way Trader Joe’s

More charges are possible

Investigators believe the group may be responsible for more crimes than they currently are being charged with. Similar crimes that happened at the same time period are under investigation and could lead to additional charges.

McNerthney says their arrest and charges will hopefully be a wake-up call for other juveniles headed down the wrong path.

“I think there are some kids who think, “Oh, I’m never going to get in real trouble for this.’ But there are many kids who do, and those decisions can be life changing for a lot of people,” McNerthney said.

The juveniles were placed in secure detention at the Patricia H. Clark Family Justice Center in Seattle.

Suspect dead in Auburn after eviction order leads to officer involved shooting https://mynorthwest.com/3961034/officer-involved-shooting-auburn/ Fri, 24 May 2024 22:37:46 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3961034 An eviction order led to an officer involved shooting in Auburn late Friday morning, according to a local investigation team.

According to a statement from the Valley Independent Investigative Team (VITT), deputies with the King County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and the Auburn Police Department responded to 24 Auburn Way S in Auburn to serve a “high risk civil eviction order” late Friday morning. Within minutes of arriving at the building, deputies made contact, “which led to them utilizing deadly force.”

Despite first responders’ efforts, the subject was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

According to KIRO 7, a video of the shooting shows a SWAT team approached a home and was fired on before they fired back.

The VIIT is serving as the independent investigative team for this officer involved shooting, its statement reads. The VIIT is a multiagency team made up of investigators from seven south King County Police Departments: Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Port of Seattle, and Tukwila. Since the VIIT incident involved the King County Sheriff’s Office and Auburn Police, their departments have been excluded from this investigation.

Six deputies were involved in this incident and have been placed on administrative leave.

Detectives from the Valley Independent Investigative Team (VITT) responded and are actively investigating the incident. The Des Moines Police Department is the lead investigating agency.

Earlier Friday, the King County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a post on X its deputies were involved in an officer involved shooting Friday morning in Auburn.

Are big time gangs operating in King County? https://mynorthwest.com/3960980/are-big-time-gangs-operating-king-county/ Fri, 24 May 2024 13:46:57 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3960980 After a string of shootings occurred throughout King County, prosecutors believe the region is suffering from a gang problem, but it’s more complicated than it seems.

“Seattle is no different than any other major city where you see organized gangs, but you also see people who grew up together and may not have the formal definition of a gang, but they hang together and there’s a possible pattern of behavior there,” Casey McNerthney, director of communications at the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, told KIRO Newsradio.

King County prosecutors have charged 30 murder cases so far this year — many of them involving a firearm.

Jason Rantz on Seattle gangs: Seattle has a gang problem that Democrats won’t mention

The two latest shootings happened within about 24 hours of each other. A West Seattle mom was struck by stray bullets as she slept in the same bed as her child in one shooting. Fortunately, the child was not injured, but in the second shooting, another toddler was left in critical condition after they were hit by a stray bullet.

Previous coverage on the shooting: 2-year-old hit with stray bullet in Skyway apartment shooting, in critical condition

“It’s too early to say in those cases exactly what’s happening,” McNerthney said. “Many of those are still with police investigators, so investigators will be looking at that possibility, the same as they would in any case of gun violence.”

Nearly every police or law enforcement agency in the area, alongside the King County Prosecutors’ Office, has a unit dedicated to violent crimes instigated primarily by gangs — focusing their time and resources on piecing together the puzzle that is the local gang scene.

“There are people behind the scenes and not in the headlines that every day look at social media activity, at patterns, at jail phone calls, at any source of information that they can use to prevent violence,” McNerthney said.

More from James Lynch: Ex-Tacoma cop Timothy Rankine plans to file lawsuit against city, attorney general

McNerthney stated it doesn’t matter whether it’s a tightly knit, organized gang or an informal group of friends who act badly, the violence is the same and both will be pursued, arrested and prosecuted to the extent the law allows.

“I think it’s frustrating for people sometimes because they don’t always hear about it in the headlines,” McNerthney added. “When you don’t hear about it, they want to know it is being done, but those steps to avoid gun violence and further violence while also trying to reach people before they get involved in it are certainly happening behind the scenes every day.”

Former assisted living caregiver charged with raping 2 patients in Shoreline https://mynorthwest.com/3960926/former-assisted-living-caregiver-charged-rape-two-patients-shoreline/ Fri, 24 May 2024 11:57:00 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3960926 A former caregiver at an assisted living facility in Shoreline has been charged with multiple counts of rape involving patients at the facility.

The caregiver, Romulo Ramos de Guzman, was charged with two counts of second-degree rape at Aegis Living Center in Shoreline. The two victims both have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and deal with “significant cognitive impairment,” according to court documents acquired by multiple media outlets, including KOMO News and KING 5. In the documents, the victims are identified by their initials only.

More sexual assault cases: UW students, staff question response to football player accused of rape

“We deeply regret the pain and trauma these residents and their families have experienced,” Aegis Living Shoreline said to both outlets as part of a prepared statement. “We continue to be deeply concerned about this incident, and the impact of the recent indictment, on our residents and their families. We are committed to ensuring their safety, well-being, and happiness in our community.”

One of the victims reported the sexual assault to her sister back in November 2022, according to the court documents acquired by the outlets, and was taken to the hospital for a sexual assault examination. According to the victim, the sexual assaults began several weeks before, happening at least four times earlier.

A second victim reported she was raped by de Guzman just two days prior to the first victim’s claim.

Denying the rape allegations, de Guzman left the country for the Philippines for nearly a year. When he returned to the U.S., he was under constant surveillance, according to court documents noted in the reports. During this time, investigators recovered a cigarette he discarded and eventually matched the DNA found on the cigarette to the DNA profile of the victim, leading to de Guzman’s arrest.

More on sexual assault in Washington: Rape kit backlog has been cleared

The state requested de Guzman’s bail to be set at $350,000 as the defendant poses “a serious flight risk.” If he posts bail, de Guzman is required to surrender his passport.

Woman shot in her bed while her child was next to her in West Seattle https://mynorthwest.com/3960947/woman-shot-bed-while-she-slept-with-child-west-seattle/ Thu, 23 May 2024 23:11:47 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3960947 A woman was shot and injured and her young child was nearly hit, when bullets during a shooting struck and penetrated the bedroom wall of their home early Wednesday in West Seattle, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) reported.

According to a post on the department’s SPD Blotter, officers responded to the 9400 block of 27th Avenue Southwest at around 2:40 a.m. Wednesday to the report of a woman being shot. They discovered the victim who had been shot twice in the legs. The officers then provided medical aid until the Seattle Fire Department (SFD) arrived and transported her to Harborview Medical Center. That victim is in stable condition, the department said.

Department officers learned the victim and her child were sleeping in the same bed when gunfire rang out from a nearby courtyard, the SPD Blotter post states. The toddler managed to escape the incident unharmed.

More gunfire in Washington: Child, 2, hit with stray bullet in Skyway apartment shooting, in critical condition

Surveillance video shared with KOMO News from a neighbor shows three people dressed in black walking around an area outside of the residence where the woman and young child were sleeping and pointing toward the victim’s home and windows. Those three people then fired dozens of shots into the side of the building, including through the windows, before running from the scene. (The video of the shooting can be seen on the KOMO website. Viewer discretion is advised.)

“I saw three guys walk up, pull guns out, walk up to my neighbor’s window and they start shooting several shots, probably like 50 or 60 shots,” the neighbor said to KOMO News. “(Crime is) getting worse, like the rest of Seattle, but it’s in particular really bad. Out of control.”

SPD officers “located dozens of casings and recovered several spent bullets,” according to the SPD Blotter. The post also stated that the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

Anyone who has information has been asked to call the SPD Violent Crime Tip Line at (206) 233-5000. People can also call the Crime Stoppers line at 1-800-222-TIPS. Crime Stoppers reminds potential callers it never asks for names and those who call can remain anonymous.

Two people dead in Yelm standoff involving SWAT, bomb squad https://mynorthwest.com/3960796/two-people-dead-yelm-standoff-swat-bomb-squad/ Wed, 22 May 2024 15:03:36 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3960796 A long police standoff in Yelm ended with two people dead Tuesday night, and now law enforcement is claiming the standoff could be related to a death investigation at an adjacent property.

Early Tuesday morning, firefighters were called to an RV fire near 103rd Avenue and Old McKenna Road. The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office was promptly called once firefighters discovered what they thought could have been a body.

More local crime: Watch for scam phone calls pretending to be law enforcement

When Thurston County Sheriff deputies and detectives arrived, their investigation led to a locked travel trailer on an adjacent property with two people inside, according to KIRO 7. Deputies were able to get one person out while an armed man remained inside.

Law enforcement negotiated with the armed suspect for several hours but were not able to get him to surrender. SWAT and the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad were both asked to be called in to help, but the suspect eventually took his own life.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office believes there is a connection between their death investigation and the standoff.

“They may have known each other in some way,” a Thurston County deputy told KIRO 7. “I don’t know how well they knew each other at this time.”

Alleged stalker tried to kidnap teen in front of her parents in Bothell, documents state https://mynorthwest.com/3960773/alleged-stalker-tried-kidnap-teen-in-front-of-her-parents-bothell-documents-state/ Wed, 22 May 2024 09:52:55 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3960773 Unfortunately, attempted child kidnappings happen all too frequently. But seldom do they happen in the presence of the child’s parents.

That’s what the Bothell Police Department (BPD) said happened on April 26, near Frank Love Elementary School.

Court documents say the girl, 17, was standing with her parents outside the school, waiting to pick up her siblings.

That’s when 26-year-old Fernando Rojas allegedly grabbed the girl and tried to pull her away and the parents intervened. In written statements to police, the parents say Rojas threatened to kill the girl and her mother.

Before the Bothell incident: Suspect met teen online years earlier

According to court documents, the teenager first met Rojas on social media when she was 14. At the time, the girl thought Rojas was a teenager.

But friendly conversations about music turned uncomfortable. When Rojas told her his real age, she cut all ties, blocked him, and changed her cell phone number. According to court documents, Rojas persisted. His tone changed and he began making threats to kill her.

More from the crime blotter: Man, 39, convicted of groping teen on flight from Dubai to Seattle

The girl says he stalked her, telling police he showed up repeatedly to her bus stop. She says he previously attacked her and tried to drag her away, threatening to rape and kill her. She eventually made the shift to online learning. She hadn’t told her parents at the time because she didn’t want to scare them, documents say.

Then on April 26, the girl and her parents were at the Bothell school, when she noticed Rojas walking toward them. Court documents say he tried to drag her away. The girl’s mother stepped in between them and managed to scare him away. The girl’s father reportedly chased him into a surrounding neighborhood.

Officers tracked down Rojas after reviewing surveillance video of attack on the day of the incident.

Rojas faces a multitude of charges, including first-degree kidnapping, attempted first-degree kidnapping, stalking, assault and harassment. His bail has been set at $500,000.

Video shows gunfire erupting near a kids baseball game in Auburn https://mynorthwest.com/3960621/video-shows-gunfire-erupting-near-kids-baseball-game-auburn/ Mon, 20 May 2024 18:01:30 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3960621 The video below contains content that may be disturbing for some. Shots fired near a youth baseball game in Auburn Sunday evening caused panic among players and families and it was captured on video.

The footage shared online shows the young players dropping to the ground during the game that took place at Brannan Park after the gunfire was heard, and then running for their lives and scrambling to safety. Independent journalist Steve Hickey, who goes by @photogsteve81 on X and Instagram, obtained the game video and posted it. He noted that no one at the game was injured after the gunshots rung out.

The Auburn Police Department (APD) told KIRO Newsradio Monday two groups got into a dispute near Isaac Evans Park, which is on the other side of the river from Brannan Park. The two groups left in separate vehicles and at least one person fired a gun as they were leaving.

Previous Auburn incident: Teen driver arrested after allegedly tearing through crowded park, hitting woman

According to APD Public Information Officer Kolby Crossley, two people were hit during that incident, a man in his late teens and a woman who is in her 20s. Both of them currently are at a local hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life threatening. It is believed the people hit were part of the dispute in question, but APD was working to confirm that detail Monday morning.

One of the vehicles that was leaving crashed and the suspects ran from the scene. The K9 unit was brought in to track the suspects, but they were not successful in apprehending them.

Renton detectives looking for group who killed man, attacked another https://mynorthwest.com/3960560/renton-police-looking-group-who-killed-man-attacked-another/ Sun, 19 May 2024 18:34:34 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3960560 Renton police are looking for the people who shot and killed a 19-year-old and attacked another man on Saturday.

According to the Renton Police Department (RPD) via a Facebook post, the overnight shooting happened just before 10 p.m. on Saturday on Airport Way.

When officers arrived, they found the 19-year-old man in his car with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers tried to save his life but he died at the scene.

While investigating, RPD said officers found another man who had been physically assaulted by a group of men ranging in age from 25 to 50 years old.

Other crime: King County deputies intercept Burien drug ring tied to Sinaloa cartel

The man told police the group attacked him in the parking lot. As he ran back inside a business, he heard the shooting but didn’t see anything.

However, all of the suspects were gone by the time officers got there. Detectives then interviewed witnesses and gathered evidence. They are continuing to investigate.

Facebook user Nora Williams Cottrill commented on RPD’s post, asking if police would release information about the type of car. RPD responded, saying detectives will release information if they need help identifying the suspects but it is too early in the investigation right now.

‘It’s getting worse’: More than 50 windows smashed in Tacoma’s ‘Antique Row’ https://mynorthwest.com/3960547/its-getting-worse-more-than-50-windows-smashed-tacomas-antique-row/ Sun, 19 May 2024 07:23:19 +0000 https://mynorthwest.com/?p=3960547 TACOMA, Wash. — More than a dozen businesses in Downtown Tacoma on Antique Row were vandalized early Saturday.

Police arrested a woman for allegedly smashing 56 windows from Broadway to Market along ‘Antique Row.’ She was booked on charges of Malicious Mischief and Resisting Arrest.

“It happens from time to time but not on this magnitude,” said Alan Gorsuch at Sanford and Son Antiques.

Gorsuch’s shop is one of the 16 businesses hit around 3 a.m. on Saturday.

He says it’s going to cost upwards of $15,000 to fix seven of their damaged windows.

“It’s expensive, again. I replaced that one twice and now this will be the third time,” Gorsuch explained.

He says the most frustrating part is that it keeps on happening.

“It’s getting worse because nothing’s done about it. And we don’t have and police presence in Downtown Tacoma anymore and these people know that so they do whatever they want to do,” Gorsuch added.

More from Antique Row in Tacoma

It’s a heartbreaking sight for Mitch Barstead, who’s the owner of Mecca Mercantile.

“Ruining people’s businesses that are trying to make money and we have enough obstacles on a daily basis to deal with this,” he said.

Barstead told KIRO 7 that the suspect struck 12 windows at his shop. He said the city offered to board it up at a cost.

“I said, well don’t touch my windows then. I’m not paying the city to board my windows up. We already have enough expenses with things,” Barstead said.

Just a few shops down, surveillance video captured the same woman destroying the storefront at Big Dawg Barbershop.

“This one’s more of the Picasso of the broken ones. We have this crack wrapped around the corner all around the Big Dawg,” owner Alex Verchereau explained.

Verchereau’s shop windows have several cracks and holes that need to be repaired.

“Hopefully the rain doesn’t seep through and maybe we can get a window maybe in the next 6 months,” he said.

Verchereau said it’s hard to see so much destruction in such a short amount of time.

“It was disheartening because we put a lot of effort into our business and unfortunately it seems like we don’t get the respect back from the community or some people in the community,” he said.

He hopes the City of Tacoma can do more to protect these small businesses.

“Maybe we can have some sort of security that’s you know 24/7 or at least through the late nights,” Verchereau said.
