“When she was on the starting line, we did notice that this athlete was quite differently built. And we could tell something was a little different at that point, but their backs returned to us so we couldn’t see their faces,” Wilson told “The John and Jake Show” on KIRO Newsradio last week. “And so we had no idea. And it wasn’t until they stepped up on that podium that the chatter started to go around the field.”

Wilson’s daughter later told her the first-place winner was a boy. Her daughter also shared that she believed she could have won first place if she had known that, to which Wilson responded that she just wasn’t sure.

“It’s just he’s just stronger and faster. And you could see that as he did that last, you know, 100 meters. He was he just came flying by and she had given it everything she had. And he just had more,” she said.

John Curley host of “The John and Jake Show” noted that the way the rules are written is that anyone can compete by what gender they identify as.

Curley added that boys are built with a larger lung capacity and a different hip structure, inferring a biological advantage

Wilson shared that she thinks it isn’t fair for girls to compete against a biological boy. However, she also believes the online attacks the transgender child faced were unfair.

“I hope that we can find a way to make it fair for girls, and also for this transgender child as well, that he can race somewhere and not be ridiculed,” she said.

Wilson added the solution is simple — create a co-ed division where anyone can race.

Spokane-born, Gonzaga graduate and personal injury attorney Jon Selden was so infatuated with the trial he decided to skip part of his 21st wedding anniversary to attend.

“I was mainly just going for the spectacle. And we just happened to have this trip planned in New York and I know my wife would rather probably go shopping or something without me for at least half a day. And I was like, you know what, I’m just gonna do it,” Selden told John Curley, Host of “The John and Jake Show” on KIRO Newsradio on Friday.

Last week, Selden left his hotel room at 4:30 a.m. and got in line at the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse to hopefully secure a seat at the trial, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Selden told Curley the first person in line most likely arrived around midnight. Behind the first person, there were two professional line holders who arrived at 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Selden said he got to the line around 4:45 a.m. and was fifth in line, barely making it inside as only six were allowed.

Selden also shared that he forgot his ID at his hotel, but luckily for him, security didn’t check IDs. When he got inside, he was seated in the back.

“It’s like 200 reporters and then six members of the public. And we’re in the back, kind of the second row to the back. But we were right on the aisle. So Trump has to come in and out of the same doors everybody else does and so every time he marched up and down the aisle, I could have reached out and touched him if I wanted to get shot or something. But you couldn’t make a move without someone looking at you,” Selden told Curley.

Selden was hoping to hear from Stormy Daniels but ended up with “pretty boring testimony” he said. The witness was the former accountant for the Trump organization. But Selden said an exciting part was when the judge found Trump in contempt.

“We all thought he was about to go into jail because he was like, ‘Obviously my $1,000 fines are not working here and so you know, I don’t want to put you in jail, sir, but I will.’ And we all thought, man is this guy about to sentence Trump to a night in a Manhattan holding pen? It was pretty crazy,” Selden said.

Michael Cohen testifies in Trump hush money trial

However, Selden missed another interesting witness: Michael Cohen.

As reported by The Associated Press (AP), the long-anticipated testimony on Monday from Trump’s former lawyer and personal fixer follows a breathtaking buildup by prosecutors of a case that ultimately hinges on record-keeping. Trump is accused of falsifying internal business records to cover up hush money payments that Cohen made as part of efforts to buy and bury stories that might hurt the former president’s 2016 campaign.

The AP reported that Cohen directly implicated the former president in a hush-money scheme, telling jurors that his celebrity client tasked him on several occasions to stifle stories about sex that he feared could torpedo his 2016 presidential campaign.

“Stop this from getting out,” Cohen, the prosecution’s star witness, quoted Trump as telling him in reference to porn actor Stormy Daniels’ account of a sexual encounter with Trump a decade earlier.

Lawyer: Women suing SPD for sexual harassment are face of recruitment efforts

Under questioning from a prosecutor, Cohen detailed the steps he took to mask the payments — which he had agreed to front — from his wife and his bank, according to The AP. When he opened a bank account to pay Daniels, an action he said he told Trump he was taking, he said it was for a new limited liability corporation but withheld the actual purpose.

“I’m not sure they would’ve opened it if it stated: to pay off an adult film star for a non-disclosure agreement,” he said.

Since the men’s fallout, Cohen has emerged as a relentless critic of Trump, appearing as recently as last week in a live TikTok wearing a shirt featuring a figure resembling Trump with his hands cuffed, behind bars. The AP reported that the judge on Friday urged prosecutors to tell Cohen to refrain from making any more statements about the case or Trump.

The women allege the department is punishing them for refusing to give in to their male supervisors’ bullying and harassment. The claim also stated that other women have come forward saying SPD is a “good ol’ boys club” and has a history of misogyny.

Therefore, the employees have filed a tort claim, an informal notice to solve the issue without going to court, avoiding expensive costs.

Sumeer Singla is the lawyer representing the four women. On Tuesday, he was on “The John and Shari Show” on KIRO Newsradio to discuss the women’s accusations.

The first thing John Curley, co-host of “John and Shari,” asked Singla was if he noticed anything missing from current news coverage of the case.

Singla explained that SPD is doing a push to recruit more officers and part of that push is the 30×30 initiative. Thus, the department wants women to make up 30% of the force by 2030.

However, what many people have left out, he said, is that three of the four women suing SPD are at the forefront of that initiative.

“Three of my clients are the front-facing part of the department being used to recruit female officers,” Singla responded.

Singla also said he was surprised at how the women have been treated since they went public with their complaints.

SPD accused of victim-blaming women who have come forward

“This is a department that came out and said, ‘Hey, look, we’re trying to recruit more women,’ we’re going to use my clients, videos, photographs to have more women come on board. And when those same people that they’re using to recruit are saying, ‘Hey, we’re actually facing discrimination within’ they are rallied with statements like, ‘Well, you know, this is a male-dominated environment and we are sorry that you have this individualized perception of victimhood,'” Singla said.

Shari Elliker, co-host of “John and Shari,” asked what exactly happened to the women.

Singla explained that the women, who were newly hired, were told to stick with a male officer to learn the ropes of the job. However, what appeared to be a mentoring relationship allegedly led to a grooming relationship, where the women were sexually harassed.

One woman was invited to a work trip in Las Vegas, where Lt. John O’Neil allegedly told her he was “really good at sex.” Singla said other crude remarks were also allegedly made during the trip.

Chief Diaz was also accused of harassment. He allegedly told one of the women he could come over to repair things at her house. He allegedly said he would “come over tonight and take a look.” The woman said she was made uncomfortable by the comments.

The four women also told Singla their harassment claims would be swept under the rug whenever they would report them.

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has hired an outside investigator to look into claims of gender discrimination and sexual harassment in SPD, according to a report in The Seattle Times Tuesday night.

The letter reads, in part:

As I have stated previously, my administration is committed to building a police service that is representative of our community, including ensuring women are empowered and able to succeed. Indeed, this is my clear expectation for SPD and its command staff.

To this end, I take these recent allegations very seriously and believe it is essential for public trust and confidence to commission an external and independent review,” Harrell wrote.

“We’re getting boats in the water as fast as humanly possible,” Inslee said on The John and Shari Show on KIRO 97.3 FM. “There are five electric boats that are going through the RFP process to get them in as fast as humanly possible.

“There have been some folks who’ve argued that we should abandon the current plan of having electric drive boats and go to diesel,” Inslee continued. “The problem with that is that will actually slow down the process.”

More trouble for Washington State Ferries: 38% of vessels are out of service

Inslee argued that switching from the originally-planned electric ferries back to diesel-powered ferries would restart the bidding process — delaying everything by a year or two. He also stated diesel technology is no faster to install than electric at this point.

“Electric boats now have mature technology,” Inslee said. “In Norway, they’re working great. The crews love them, the people love them. It’s really mature technology.”

Inslee’s plan to go electric is to curb and reduce the approximate 309 million pounds of carbon produced from approximately 15 million gallons of diesel the ferry boats consume.

The bids for construction of an electric ferry are due this August, with the award contract coming in October. It’s estimated to take two years to build.

“But we have the financing to do this right now. I’m happy to do it now,” Inslee said. “(The funding) comes through the Climate Commitment Act, so we have a way to finance this. I’m happy we want to build those boats. Believe me, people want boats in the water. I do too.”

“We’re still looking at 10 years out? You declared it in 2018 that we’re not going to get the boats until 2028,” John Curley, co-host of The John and Shari Show, asked. “For the people that are trying to live their life, as you do, back and forth from Bainbridge or people going to Bremerton, what do you say to them now? Just be patient?”

“I would say they have the same frustration that their governor does. I’ve experienced the same frustration with them regarding this,” Inslee answered. “What I would say is it’s real, it’s justified and we’re going as fast as humanly possible.”

Inslee explained one of the delays came from the state’s desire to build the boats domestically. Governor Inslee and his team found a company totally committed to the idea, but the company was quickly sold to a hedge fund and the hedge fund pivoted from the particular program regarding constructing ferries in Washington.

“So we couldn’t reach a deal with them,” Inslee said. “They refused to give us a guarantee of the boat and so we had to open (the bidding) up. The bigger problem was their refusal to stand by the product and give us a performance guarantee.

“I will just tell you, if they continued to own that company, we would have been two years ahead of the schedule,” Inslee added.

“We realized that our revenge porn laws are clear if it’s an actual image, but it wasn’t clear that there were any laws broken because the images were fabricated,” Mullet said on The John and Shari Show. “The bill we passed fixed that. Now our hope is that, hopefully, we’ll get federal legislation so all 50 states make it clear that using AI to spread revenge porn, even if you’re altering the image to be fake, is not allowed.”

The incident initially occurred at Issaquah High School’s homecoming dance, but Caroline and her friends did not know until a few weeks after the dance that a male classmate was allegedly circulating fake nude images of girls who attended the dance, including sexually explicit pictures that he had fabricated using an artificial intelligence app, according to The New York Times. The app was designed to automatically “strip” clothed photos of real girls and women.

“One of the boys brought a camera, took pictures of the girls and then used AI technology to basically make them look like they were naked and then he spread it around the school,” Mullet said.

Caroline Mullet spoke to lawmakers about the severity of this case at a Jan. 29 House Community Safety, Justice and Reentry Committee meeting after her friends felt too uncomfortable and exposed to testify in Olympia.

“He laughed about it and sent it to his peers as though it was funny,” Caroline Mullet said. “I hate the idea that I should have to worry about this happening again to any of my female friends, my sisters or even myself.”

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) reported child abuse online rose by more than 12% in 2023 compared with the previous year, surpassing 36.2 million reports, the organization said in its annual CyberTipline report.

Half of the U.S. population is now covered under state bans on nonconsensual explicit images made with artificial intelligence, according to Bloomberg. Indiana, Utah and New Mexico all recently passed legislation this year barring deepfakes while Wisconsin, Florida, Oregon and Arizona have bills waiting to pass their state legislatures. California, Hawaii, Illinois, Minnesota, New York, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Florida and Georgia had legislation against deepfakes in place before the start of 2024.

“Why is this not child pornography?” John Curley, co-host of The John and Shari Show, asked Mullet. “Because there are laws on the books about child pornography. Is it because it’s fake?”

“Because it’s a fabricated image, but we fixed that now,” Mullet answered. “It was just a fabricated image part that wasn’t in it, but now there are both criminal and civil penalties from that, so we’re in a much better spot now the bill was passed.”

On a different topic, John Curley asked Mullet what his reaction was to Washington’s Republican Party convention in Spokane kind of falling apart.

“I think my theme has been, there is a split in the Republican Party between the people who support the Trump candidates and the people who aren’t into the Trump candidates. And everyone kept telling me all Republicans just gonna support Dave Reichert. And I said, ‘No, you guys aren’t talking,’ I’m traveling around the state, I’m talking to people. I said we did 100 campaign events last year, every event we did was a mix of Democrats and Republicans,” Mullet responded.

And I think just being on the ground all around the state, it was very clear to me that there is a split in the Republican Party between the Trump wing and the non-Trump wing, and that split basically played out for everyone to see at the convention. And like you said, our campaign has been betting on this, because our path out of the primary is when you have a split of the Republican vote, that creates a path to actually have, you know, a moderate Democrat who was endorsed by the law enforcement community, get out of the primary and in the top two,” he continued.

“EEW A BUG,” “TIMELESS,” and “MUAHAHA” are a few that stand out.

But the license plate “I-1THIS” (translating to “I won this”) is more than creative, it comes with a story of triumph.

John Curley, host of The John and Shari Show, recounted the tale of the man with the winning plate this week on KIRO Newsradio. The following is a transcript of the story John told on Thursday, March 14.

John Curley tells Scott Fitzsimmons’ story

Scott Fitzsimmons was quite the athlete in high school. He was a gymnast in college. He also played some baseball. So he was a good athlete, not a big guy, but a good athlete. He entered a contest that Mazda was having for a home run derby. The contest was if you get hit a home run at the Kingdome, in front of everybody, on the 28th of September 1985, on Fan Appreciation Night, you would win a Mazda.

They picked 22 people and they narrowed it down to just four contestants who would be competing on the 28th of September.

Scott Fitzsimmons knew that on that particular day, he was going to the Kingdome to try to hit a home run in the Kingdome and win the Mazda.

His horoscope on that day said, “Today, you will win something.”

He showed up in Kent a couple of hours earlier, just to get sort of the butterflies out and hit a few. And while he’s there, these two guys were like, “Hey, we’ll shag them for you.” So they’re shagging them.

“Where are you going?” asked one of the guys.

Scott said, “I’m going over the kingdom to try to win a Mazda.”

One of the guys said, “Oh, good luck!”

Scott arrived at the kingdom that evening. The stands were full. And the two guys that were shagging with him earlier in Kent turned out to be the two guys he was competing against.

Three of them didn’t get the home run. Scott was the fourth guy up.

The first pitch — he hit into the outfield.

The second — a pop fly.

Scott then said to the Mariners pitching coach, Phil Ruth, “Put it right here. Put it right here.” And pointed.

Phil nodded his head, OK. And threw it in. It came in tight and high and brushed back, Scott. And the crowd went “Whoa!” Like he was trying to hit them.

Scott looked at Phil, smiled and pointed again where he wanted it. And then — he threw it.

Scott Fitzsimmons turned on that ball.

‘I didn’t even feel it, but I saw it all the way out of left field’

“I didn’t even feel it, but I saw it all the way out to left field,” he said.

And it just so happened that his friend, who had bought a seat to that game, was sitting in that chair, reached out and caught the ball.

Scott ran around, got to the second base, looked out to the crowd and they were going absolutely crazy.

He went to third base, jogged along and got to home plate. When he got to home plate, he did a round-off backflip on the home plate. And the place went nuts.

They gave him his white Mazda pickup truck, they drove it around the field and when he got to his seat, of course, he was on cloud nine at this point, his friend said, “Hey, I got your ball. I just happened to be sitting in the seat where you hit it.”

And Scott still has the truck to this day. He’s got the ball. He’s got the license plate. And he has his horoscope. He saved all of those things.

The owner, Jason Roth, had to live in a van instead of his home for a stretch of time.

“Jason, what happened a couple of hours ago at your home with the squatter that had been living in there?” John Curley, co-host of The John and Shari Show, asked Roth.

“The sheriff kicked him out,” he replied.

Roth bought his South Seattle home in 2016. A mechanic by trade, he spent time working on the building so he could list the house as a rental. Roth eventually found a tenant who “appeared responsible,” but on March 1, 2023, the tenant failed to pay their rent. In the subsequent weeks, Roth learned that a portion of his property was being listed on Airbnb and his tenant was turning a profit — all while not paying rent.

After the initial $1,000 from the initial lease agreement, Roth never received a payment from the tenant. He lived in his van on some nights in his van while couch surfing with relatives other nights until he could recover his home.

The first court appearance for this ordeal was Oct. 23 but an attorney supplied by the Housing Justice Project asked for a continuance — pushing the next court date to March 12. The Housing Justice Project is an organization in King County that helps low-income tenants with landlord-tenant law cases. In turn, Roth recruited the Rental Housing Association of Wash.

“I would not look into being a landlord in Washington unless you are a Rental Housing Association member because the laws are changing so fast that even the lawyers can’t keep up with them,” Roth said. “This association, I know it sounds like a plug, but they solved this problem for me by training and teaching me, getting me up to speed, recommending a better lawyer. You can’t keep up with all the changing laws unless you have someone doing that for you.”

The situation crescendoed when Roth discovered a social media account that showed wild parties being thrown at the residence. Roth confirmed that it was his home being shown in the photos, but claimed the tenant “wasn’t a messy guy.” The house was packed with his tenant’s stuff, currently outside the home on the curb, and if he fails to collect his things, Roth would be responsible for disposing it all.

This situation also won’t appear on the tenant’s permanent record.

“Part of the settlement is that it doesn’t get reported to credit,” Roth said. “And there’s nothing on his record. I mean, he has other things on his record. He doesn’t have the cleanest record, but this is not going to be on there.”

Another part served him a lawsuit amid this eviction process over an unrelated matter, according to Roth.

The current eviction timeline in King County for non-payment of rent takes 360 days minimum, according to the Rental Housing Association.

“One more thing,” Roth added. “I have to throw a backyard barbecue party and have all of you guys come over.”

“Backyard barbecue party? You know, I can think of a few things I’d like to set on fire to start that barbecue if it’s still there in front of your house,” Curley answered.

So I do this all the time. It’s been a part of my regular morning routine and then I saw that this guy has got it all written down: You’re supposed to get up in the morning and dance naked every day. That’s what it says.

So I get up, go downstairs, feed the dogs, let them outside and then I have a routine because I want to try to get going and start getting oxygen to the brain by doing this: queuing Andrea Bocelli’s “Con te partirò.” Imagine me naked OK — put black boxes over parts you don’t want to see as long as you’re picturing this in your mind — as I throw my arms in the air, fingers wide open, going spread eagle (push that black box down a little bit Shari!). Deep breaths as I sing (or scream) alongside Bocelli during some stretches.

“I’m kind of sold on this idea,” Joe Wallace, the producer of The John and Shari Show on KIRO 97.3 FM, told me.

“But why didn’t you pick a more up-tempo song so you can get your blood running,” co-host Shari Elliker asked me. “What is this, a ballet? Are you doing some kind of Tai Chi to this? Do you just sort of glide around the room?”

First off, my cold-hearted co-host, I love that song (which can most recently be heard as the music for this year’s Academy Awards’ “In Memoriam” segment or more famously as the climactic conclusion of “Step Brothers”).

Secondly, if you want to hear the truth — I took a year of ballet in college. So I do a little something a little a couple PK turns I might go into fourth position or fifth position. Rond de jambe, rond de jambe. Some complete PK turns and then I might do a few leaps or something, I can’t remember what those are called, and then I get into the shower.

Shari asked me if I ever vary it up. Do I get tired of that same song every day? The answer is no, I just turn it up louder.

I’m serious, you got to get the oxygen to the brain. You got to get going. There’s like a whole breathing thing and everything else that goes with it. I’m telling you, you just got to embrace the gratitude. Embrace all your gifts, all your challenges. Shari had a friend who told us when she wakes up every morning, the first thing she says is “thank you for letting me live another day.” That’s a good start, but she needs to do it with some Andrea Bocelli blaring throughout your morning routine.
